Our sustainable balcony furniture is made from plantation teak wood sourced from Indonesia. The furniture is produced under a FLEGT license.

The abbreviation FLEGT stands for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade. The European Union enters into a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with countries, including Indonesia. According to the FLEGT licensing system, specified wood products (including teak balcony furniture) exported from a partner country like Indonesia and entering the European Community must be covered by a FLEGT license issued by the partner country at a customs post designated for entry into free circulation.

Background on Indonesia and FLEGT

Indonesia covers approximately 181.2 million hectares, spread across 17,000 islands. About 70 percent of the land area is considered forested, with half allocated for production purposes. Nearly a third, or 34.8 million hectares, of the national forest area is deforested or degraded. Additionally, 12.8 million hectares, or 10.7% of the national forest area, is designated for non-forest use. About half of this is forested.

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest exporters of tropical wood products, produced from logging activities in natural forests, industrial plantations, smallholder-managed plantations, and imported wood. Indonesia exports a wide variety of wood products, ranging from plywood, pulp, and paper to furniture and crafts. The value of this trade was 10.4 billion euros in 2019.

The main export markets are in Asia (China, Japan, and South Korea). Indonesia is also by far the largest FLEGT VPA trading partner of the EU, with an export of wood products valued at 1.1 billion euros in 2019.

In 2003, Indonesia began developing a market-based wood control system for all its wood exports, building on mandatory third-party certification for legality and sustainability. This system, known as SVLK, formed the basis for the legality control system under the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) between Indonesia and the EU. The VPA covers all exports and will gradually extend to the domestic market.

On November 15, 2016, Indonesia began issuing FLEGT licenses for controlled legal wood products exported to the EU. In 2017, Indonesia issued 38,961 licenses for shipments to all 28 EU member states, with a total value of over one billion euros. In 2019, 40,261 licenses were issued for the export of wood products (see the SILK database of Indonesia for more information).

Treatment and Maintenance

Before you start using your teak Rectangular Foldable Balcony Table with Railing Clamp, you might consider treating it with Rubio Monocoat Hybrid Wood Protector or Teak Dressing and Sealer from Teak Wonder.

Wood is a natural product and is therefore subject to weather influences. As sun, rain, and wind affect the teak wood, it will gradually gray and dry out. Treating the teak wood will slow down the natural aging process. It will also enhance the appearance of the wood by reinforcing the grain structure.

That’s why all of our products are professionally and securely packaged, so your order arrives safely and undamaged at the place where it will stand for years — or eventually find a new home.

Because of their weight and size, larger items such as the balcony bench and balcony lounge set are shipped in multiple parcels. For even heavier and larger balcony furniture such as the balcony lounge bench and the balcony daybed, we use pallet transport for maximum protection during transit. Unfortunately, these cannot be shipped via standard parcel services.
